Panther Tennis Defeats
the Georgetown Eagles 12-5
The Panther Tennis Team got a big win over the Georgetown Eagles 12 - 5 this past Tuesday, September 13, 2005. "This was a great match for us coming off of the Westlake Tournament. The players came out and played strong for the team and with a lot of heart," Coach Simonek.
The Panthers opened with a 4-3 lead in doubles. Leading the way for the team was the tandem of Dustin Rochelle and Ross Natividad. "These guys really stepped up and played their best doubles match this year. I was very proud of the commitments that they made to doubles play," Coach Simonek. Also winning matches to give the Panthers an early lead were: Colleen Myers/Elizabeth Allinson, Amanda Alvarado/Cat Luedtke, and Ben McCarter/Chris Fernandez.
The Panthers kicked into a higher gear as they headed into singles play, taking eight of the ten matches that were completed. Stepping up for the Panthers was Mitchell Myers. "Mitchell really did an awesome job in singles today. He played confidently and was very aggressive," Coach Simonek. Also winning for the Panthers in singles were: Ben McCarter, Frankie Allinson, and Chris Fernandez. Fernandez won a tough match after going three sets 7-6, 6-7, 7-6.
The Pantherettes were led by their #1 and #2 punch Magaly Rivera and Colleen Myers. "Both these players really stepped up and played extremely well today. The great thing is that they both have a much higher level of play that they will attain as they move forward into the season," Coach Simonek. Also pulling through for the pantherettes with wins were: Cat Luedtke and Meredith Millard.
The Pantherettes will open up district with a very big match next week against Lampasas. "This was a very close match last year and I know the players will be very focused this week as we get ready for the district opener," Coach Simonek.
