Panthers Win District, Pantherettes Second (posted 11-4-08

The Midway Panthers won the District 16-4A cross country championship, with 5 Panthers finishing in the top 10.  Louie Cook was fourth, followed closely by Dylan Washington (5th), Greg Nagel (6th), Billy Schmidt (7th), and Tyler Underwood (8th).  Jordan Bell was 15th and Drew Boles was 17th to round out the varsity boys team.  This was Midway's first district title since 2004, and their 20th title in 33 years of cross country competition for Midway.  This will be their 31st trip to regionals as a team.

The Pantherettes ran their best race of the season, as they were second to state-ranked Midlothian and held off host Cleburne.  The girls will go to regionals for their 31st time, also.  Nethika Ariyasinghe finished strong as she won the 5th place medal.  This was her fourth straight year to medal at the district meet.  Erin Kelbly picked up the other medal for Midway, as she finished 10th.  Dana Neeper was right behind Kelbly in 11th.  Antonia Isaksson was 17th, Emily Nagel 18th, and Dani Meyer 19th, with Erica Caffey coming in at 40th to round out the varsity girls.
Andrew Beaird won the JV boys gold medal as individual champion, and Jordan Rhodes won the  5th place medal as the young Panthers were second.  Robby Robbins was 23rd, Jimmie Braswell 34th, Grant Williams 44th, Nathan Sykora 45th, and Alex Johnson 49th for the JV Panthers.  Others running well for Midway were Michael Arrington, David Martinez, Cliff Rusek, Karl Lockhart, Jackson West, Kyle Grabenstein, Evan Hebert, Elias Sawaya, and Jared Skopik.
Hillary Carroll's 7th place and Brooke Winton's 10th place were good for medals in the JV girls division, as Midway was third as a team.  Others placing high were Alex Hensel (12th), Janie Reyes (19th), Makala Paschal (23rd), Aubrie Whiddon (25th), and Vanessa Peterson (27th).  Also running well for Midway were Alina Bezeera, Alexis Harpole, and Rachael Stanley.
Others who ran this year but could not participate at district included Sabina Hoida, Heather Haecker, Rayanee Schaffer, Mabree Haliburton, Jordan Clements, Jarrod Mathis, Pierce Miner, and Danny Schmidt.
Next up for the varsity teams is the Region II-4A meet, to be held Saturday, November 8, at Arlington's Vandergriff Park.  The girls race at 9:35 am, with the boys to follow at 10:00.  The top 3 teams and 10 individuals qualify for the state meet to be held in Round Rock the following Saturday.
