Cokie Reed Second at State

Cokie Reed won a silver medal in the girls' shot put at the UIL 4A State Track & Field Championships held Friday, May 11, at Mike Meyers stadium on the University of Texas campus in Austin.  Her second place winning throw of 41' 9" came on her first attempt, and she had four other throws over 41 feet, an impressive series of throws for the Midway sophomore.  The mark also broke the school record by 7 inches, set by Rashunda Johnson in winning the gold medal at state 10 years ago.  Reed did quite well for her first season of competition in track.
Lucas Neeper finished an impressive season, picking up a 5th place in the boys' pole vault.  The senior cleared 15' and just missed with a great effort at 15' 6".  The mile relay team of Katrina Turner, Aubre Phillips, Val Cammon, and Amber Phillips was fourth at the state meet, the highest finish at state of any Midway relay team in over a decade.  The girls were less than a second away from third and had a great season.  The quartet broke all three relay school records this year, and with all four coming back, next year could be very bright.

Pantherettes Third at Region II-4A Meet

Cokie Reed, Lucas Neeper, 1600 Relay Team of Katrina Turner, Amber Phillips, Aubre Phillips, and Val Cammon Headed to State

Midway senior Lucas Neeper started the weekend off with a bang, and the 1600 relays finished them off with school records as Midway competed in the 2007 Region II-4A track and field championships at the University of North Texas.  Neeper captured silver in the pole vault, qualifying for the state meet in Austin on May 11th.  Neeper, who cleared 14' 6" on his third and final attempt, had the same height as the winner, but was second on number of misses.  Sophomore Cokie Reed will join Neeper at state, as she was second in the shot put for the Pantherettes.  She threw 41' 1.75 inches, just short of the school record.  She'll go for the record in Austin, at the state meet.
The most dramatic moment for Midway was the performance of the boys and girls 1600 relays.  Katrina Turner, Amber Phillips, Aubre Phillips, and Val Cammon run all three relays for Midway, and the quartet held all three school records going into the regional meet.  Those records didn't last past the preliminary round of regional, as they set new school records in all three.  However, in this region, school records sometimes aren't enough to be in the top 3, let alone qualify for state.  In the finals, the girls were 5th in the 400 relay and 4th in the 800 relay - great accomplishments, but disappointing to the girls.  They came back determined in the 1600 relay, and came through in style.  They finished second to 6-time defending state champion Lancaster, smashing the school record by 4 seconds.  All four girls ran extremely well, and they are looking forward to chasing Lancaster again in 2 weeks at the state meet.  This is the first relay Midway has qualified for the state meet in over 10 years.  The boys mile relay was a happy ending to a soap opera type story.  The foursome of Clint Glaesmann, Matt Davis, Anthony Berry, and John Cornish had been flirting with the school record, but disaster struck at the district meet.  Glaesmann and Cornish came up injured in the finals before the 1600 relay, so Randy Tucker and Tyler Torrance stepped in and helped the team get to regional by finishing third in the district meet.  Cornish recovered enough to run at regionals, and the foursome of Tucker, Davis, Berry, and Cornish raced to a school record of 3:19.04 in the finals to finish fourth in a very tough regional.
The boys finished 9th overall as a team, with Jeff Sadler also running his best races of his Midway career.  He ran a personal best time of 9:34.06 in the 3200, beating his previous best by 14 seconds.  He was fourth in the event, and came back the next day to be 5th in the mile, also a personal best of 4:32.79.  Mitchell Myers ran his personal best time in the 1600 as well, finishing 9th in 4:41.26.  Paul Peterson also competed for Midway, finishing 7th in the pole vault.
The girls had numerous personal bests at the meet, also, and they were third as a team.  Emily Hine just missed going to state, but picked up a third-place bronze medal in the pole vault.  Nikki Shotz was fourth in the shot put, finishing a great career at Midway.  Lindsey Low was 6th in the 800 and 9th in the 1600, running personal bests in both (2:24.98 and 5:34.02).  Nethika Ariyasinghe was 13th in the 800 and 11th in the 1600, and Courtney Dawson ran her best time of the year finishing 15th in the 3200.  Megan Harlan competed in three events, finishing 7th in the 300 hurdles, 10th in the 100 hurdles, and 13th in the high jump.  Harlan was a four-year letterman for Midway and will be missed as she goes to run for Stephen F. Austin next year.  Keve Thomas was 8th in the triple jump, and Lisa Chop was 12th in the pole vault.
The 4A state meet will be held on the University of Texas campus in Austin, and Midway will have Neeper, Reed, and the 1600 relay foursome of Turner, Phillips, Phillips, and Cammon competing.  Neeper and Reed both compete at 6:00 pm, and the 1600 relay will run at 9:05.
