On Friday, the Panthers got off to another good start as they pounded out 17 hits in defeating Wylie HS, 13-4. Six Panther hitters had two or more hits led by Ryan Gebhart and Corey Gummelt who were both three for four. Jarvis Smith was two for two with a double before leaving the game with an injury. Stephen O’Beirne was two for four; Scooter Rhodes was two for five; and Anthony Guajardo was two for six with two doubles. Hayden Chick also had a double for the Panthers. Sam Hansen pitched four scoreless innings before giving up three runs in the fifth inning and pitching a scoreless sixth inning. It was Hansen’s first outing as a Panther pitcher. Zach Dickerson pitched the seventh inning giving up one unearned run.
In game two on Friday, the Panthers lost a 5-2 game to the top ranked Georgetown HS Eagles. The Panthers out hit the Eagles 7-3, but could not put together multiple hits in the same inning. Brody Walker got his first start of the season and pitched effectively for four innings before tiring in the fifth inning. With the score tied 0-0 going into the bottom of the fifth, Walker retired two of the first three hitters before walking three consecutive batters and being relieved by Scooter Rhodes. The Eagles ended up scoring all five of their runs in the fifth inning. Cameron Graham pitched a very effective sixth inning. In the top of the 7th inning, trailing 5-0, the Panthers finally got something going as Rhodes led off with a walk and moved to second base on Stephen O’Beirne’s single. Then, with two outs, Anthony Guajardo hit a two-run double off the wall to cut the lead to 5-2.
On Saturday, the Panthers had to play a 9:30 am game at Leander HS and the Panthers missed their wakeup call. The Panthers, who had had 10 or more hits in four of their first five games, only managed three hits and committed four errors in the first three innings of the game and lost 4-0 to the Keller Indians. Clay Cunningham had a double for the only extra base hit for the Panthers while Sam Hansen had an infield single and the injured Todd Glaesmann came off the bench to get a single in the 7th inning. Zach Dickerson was the tough luck losing pitcher as he pitched the first four innings and was the recipient of the Panthers shaky early defense. Dickerson struck out four and walked only one in his four innings of work. Cameron Graham pitched two innings striking out two and not walking a man to hold the Indians to a combined five hits for the day. The one bright spot for the Panthers’ defense came in the bottom of the fourth inning, trailing 4-0, and the Indians getting their first two hitters on base. The third hitter for Keller struck out and catcher Clay Cunningham caught the runner at 2B off too far which led to a rundown retiring him at 2B. Then, second baseman Scooter Rhodes turned and threw to first baseman Anthony Guajardo to retire the other runner and complete the unusual triple play!
Game Report - Monday, February 24, 2008
The Midway Panther Baseball Team got off to a fast start Friday night scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back as the Panthers opened the 2008 season with an 18-0 victory over the Fort Worth Eastern Hills Highlanders at Panther Field.
Blake Landon and Bryce Dunks combined to pitch a no-hitter in the five inning game as Landon started and pitched three innings to pick up his first win of the year. Landon faced only 10 hitters in the three innings he pitched, striking out five and walking two, but he picked off one of the two Highlanders he walked. Dunks came on to retire six consecutive Highlanders, striking out five and allowing no base runners in his two innings of work.
Scooter Rhodes had three singles in his three at bats while Todd Glaesmann and Corey Gummelt were both two for three for the Panthers. Gummelt got the first RBI in the first inning driving home Ryan Gebhart with a single. Glaesmann added to the lead with a three run homerun in the first inning. Gummelt later had a two-run double, while Hayden Chick and Sam Hansen both had RBI doubles to add to the Panthers' eight run first inning.
The Panthers had 12 total hits and got plenty of help from a Highlander pitching staff that issued 11 walks.
