2007 Major League Baseball Draft

Two former Midway HS baseball players were recently selected in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft.

Christian (Rodriguez) Colon was selected in the 10th round by the San Diego Padres.  Colon played his freshman year (2004) at Midway HS and was the last Freshman to start the whole season for the Panthers.  Colon led the 2004 team in RBI’s, was the team’s Most Improved Player, and the District’s Newcomer of the Year.  Colon played his sophomore and junior seasons in Salt Lake City, UT before moving to Anaheim, CA and playing his senior year at Canyon HS.  If he does not sign with the Padres, he has signed with Cal State Fullerton and will enroll there this fall.

Zac Oliver was selected in the 16th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Oliver pitched the Panthers to their last State Tournament appearance in 2005 before being drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 18th round that June.  Oliver played at Paris JC his freshman year and was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 23rd round last June.  Oliver played his second year at Paris JC this past spring before being drafted by the Pirates.  He had signed to attend the University of Arkansas this fall, but recently signed a contract with the Pirates.

A third former Midway Panther, Matt Czimskey, really came on at the end of his senior year  for the Baylor Bears and has signed a free agent contract with the Milwaukee Brewers.  Czimskey was the Panthers’ MVP in 2003, the year the Panthers won the 4A State Championship.  He played two years at San Jacinto JC before transferring to Baylor University last year.

Congratulations to all three of these former Panthers and good luck in making it to the Major Leagues!
